He Frowned
بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Mercifulعَبَسَ وَتَوَلّىٰ
He (Muhammad) frowned and turned away.أَن جاءَهُ الأَعمىٰ
When the blind man came to him.3

وَما يُدريكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكّىٰ
How do you know? He may purify himself.أَو يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكرىٰ
Or he may take heed, and benefit from the message.4

أَمّا مَنِ استَغنىٰ
As for the rich man.فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدّىٰ
You gave him your attention.2

وَما عَلَيكَ أَلّا يَزَّكّىٰ
Even though you could not guarantee his salvation.3

وَأَمّا مَن جاءَكَ يَسعىٰ
The one who came to you eagerly.2

وَهُوَ يَخشىٰ
And is really reverent.3

فَأَنتَ عَنهُ تَلَهّىٰ
You ignored him.3

كَلّا إِنَّها تَذكِرَةٌ
Indeed, this is a reminder.2

فَمَن شاءَ ذَكَرَهُ
Whoever wills shall take heed.2

فى صُحُفٍ مُكَرَّمَةٍ
In honorable scriptures.مَرفوعَةٍ مُطَهَّرَةٍ
Exalted and pure.بِأَيدى سَفَرَةٍ
(Written) by the hands of messengers.كِرامٍ بَرَرَةٍ
Who are honorable and righteous.قُتِلَ الإِنسٰنُ ما أَكفَرَهُ
Woe to the human being; he is so unappreciative!2

مِن أَىِّ شَيءٍ خَلَقَهُ
What did He create him from?مِن نُطفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ
From a tiny drop, He creates him and designs him.ثُمَّ السَّبيلَ يَسَّرَهُ
Then He points out the path for him.2

ثُمَّ أَماتَهُ فَأَقبَرَهُ
Then He puts him to death, and into the grave.2

ثُمَّ إِذا شاءَ أَنشَرَهُ
When He wills, He resurrects him.2
كَلّا لَمّا يَقضِ ما أَمَرَهُ
He shall uphold His commandments.1

فَليَنظُرِ الإِنسٰنُ إِلىٰ طَعامِهِ
Let the human consider his food!1
Subject indexFood › sign
أَنّا صَبَبنَا الماءَ صَبًّا
We pour the water generously.فَأَنبَتنا فيها حَبًّا
We grow in it grains.1

وَزَيتونًا وَنَخلًا
Olives and palms.1
Subject indexOlives
وَحَدائِقَ غُلبًا
A variety of orchards.1
Subject indexOrchards
وَفٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا
Fruits and vegetables.2
Subject indexFruit › as signsVegetables
مَتٰعًا لَكُم وَلِأَنعٰمِكُم
To provide life support for you and your animals.2
Subject indexAnimals › provided forLife › God supports in this
فَإِذا جاءَتِ الصّاخَّةُ
Then, when the blow comes to pass.1
Subject indexDay of Judgement › worry about own self
يَومَ يَفِرُّ المَرءُ مِن أَخيهِ
That is the day when one flees from his brother.1

وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبيهِ
From his mother and father.وَصٰحِبَتِهِ وَبَنيهِ
From his spouse and children.لِكُلِّ امرِئٍ مِنهُم يَومَئِذٍ شَأنٌ يُغنيهِ
Each one of them, on that day, worries about his own destiny.وُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ مُسفِرَةٌ
Some faces on that day will be happy.2

وَوُجوهٌ يَومَئِذٍ عَلَيها غَبَرَةٌ
Other faces, on that day, will be covered with misery.2
Subject indexFaces › miserableMisery › for disbelievers
تَرهَقُها قَتَرَةٌ
Overwhelmed by remorse.1
Subject indexRemorse
أُولٰئِكَ هُمُ الكَفَرَةُ الفَجَرَةُ
These are the wicked disbelievers.
